Tyrnyauz is the administrative center of the Elbrus district and the largest settlement. It all started in 1934, when a tungsten-molybdenum deposit was discovered here, on which the city of Tyrnyauz arose.

A single-industry town, which in many ways repeated the fate of other single-industry towns of our vast Homeland. At first, the main labor force at the mining and processing plant were convicts from the local GULAG camp: they worked from the 1940s until 1952, then freelancers took their place. The plant was one of the flagships of non-ferrous metallurgy of the USSR. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the main industrial enterprise of the CBD slowly rolled into the abyss, having suffered from a mudslide, not to mention the fact that it became completely out of fashion to work at the factory, the infrastructure was not updated, money was not allocated, people began to leave for major cities.
